He actually, deceived the native Taino people of modern day Haiti/Dominican Republic. Columbus Forced the natives into slavery and killed or mutilated many of them for not performing in gold mines, for these crimes against humanity he was later tried and stripped of his power. Even his own appointed workers revolted against him for lying about the vast riches of the New World, and Misgoverning his colonies.
These are a few reasons that I see no point in acknowledging this person. Although his exploration linked two parts of the world, it can also be said that he did more harm than Good. As a result, Many people choose to celebrate "Indigenous Peoples Day", honoring the Native American Indians and their culture.
