Womens History Month: Michelle Obama
This Women's history month, Tha Vantage would like to pay tribute to Michelle Obama. One of the most Accomplished and Socially Conscious First Ladies in History. Aside from being the first African American First Lady of The United States and A mother of two, Michelle Obama had accomplished much in life before stepping into the White House.
Born Michelle Lavaughn Robinson in 1964 in a suburb outside of Chicago Illinois, Michelle was deemed gifted by the time she reached the Sixth Grade. She attended a selective enrollment school on Chicago's west side, shattering stereotypes of people that were also from her community along the way. She has always been one to let the negativity of others fuel her passion to succeed. In 1981 She Graduated as the Salutatorian of her Class.
Michelle went on to attend Princeton University where she Majored in Sociology, and Minored in African American Studies. in 1985 She Graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of the Arts Degree. After Princeton, Michelle acquired her Juris Doctor degree from Harvard in 1985. She is only the third First Lady with a post Graduate Degree.
Michelle met Barack Obama while at Law school when she was assigned as a mentor for his summer program. "Their first official date was the Spike Lee movie Do the Right Thing". Her and Barack were two of the then few minorities at this Law firm. As an associate of the Sidney Austin Law firm Chicago she handled tasks ranging from marketing to Intellectual Property.
She has also done work with the Mayors office of Chicago, directing a non profit for At risk youth, encouraging them to engage in government agencies and social issues. She Also worked at the University of Chicago Hospitals as Vice President of Community and External Affairs. She currently holds her Law license although it is no longer need for her work.
As First Lady, she along with her husband initiated the Lets Move Program, which focused on healthy eating and eliminating childhood obesity. She was heavily criticized by Republicans, but the program still exists to this day. Her Priorities as First Lady have included Womens Empowerment, Promoting Structured Families, Military family Support, and promoting Education and The Arts.
Check out this Video of her most recent project : The Let Girls Learn Initiative. This program has recruited several Pop culture icons and focuses on empowering the estimated 62 million women around the world that don't have access to education.
Aside from being Cool, Classy, Elegant etc... Michelle Obama has real world experience and accomplishments which can be appreciated and respected. She is an excellent Role model for todays young women. An example proving that there are no Limits or excuses for you not to succeed. If she would have been discouraged by her environment and not encouraged by the lack of support from her community she would not be where she is today. Michelle Obama is no doubt, a great woman in History!

Primary Elections : Why they Matter
Today I woke Up early, and Not to Go "Get them Jays". Instead, I went to go vote in the Primary Elections. The Primary Elections is to appoint the principal candidate for the presidential Election. They are just as important as the official voting day in November. Many People will bypass this voting opportunity because they think it doesn't matter. In fact, it is the exact opposite.
For example, Donald Trump is doing exceptionally well in the primaries because his supporters are more likely to go out and vote.
Where as supporters of Bernie Sanders , a younger demographic may have them outnumbered tremendously and, yet they are not as likely to vote at primaries.
There are previous presidents who gained major traction because their voters showed up big at the polls on the primary election. As an African American, I understand how important it is to get out and vote, considering my ancestors and elders were not Allowed to. There are no excuses, I myself am a Convicted Felon, and am still eligible to Vote....If you want your voice to be heard today is the Day!
